Government. During 2010 MND Australia participated in a stakeholder consultation workshop as part of the development of the National Carer Strategy and provided a response to the Australian Government’s discussion paper on the Strategy to highlight the needs of carers of people living with MND.
The priority areas are – Recognition and Respect, Information and Access, Economic Security, Services for Carers, Education and Training and Health and Wellbeing and each has several initiatives to better support carers. MND Australia is hopeful that this Strategy and its implementation will influence changes for MND carers in Australia.
The Minister for Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, Jenny Macklin, the Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon, and the Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities and Carers, Senator Jan McLucas today visited Carers Victoria in Footscray to launch the Strategy, which includes $60 million in new funding over the next four years.

For the first time, Australia has a National Carer Strategy – the second element of the Australian Government’s National Carer Recognition Framework. Along with the Carer Recognition Act 2010, the National Carer Strategy strengthens our commitment to recognise and respond to the needs of carers so that they have rights, choices, opportunities and capabilities to participate in economic, social and community life.
The National Carer Strategycontains a vision, an aim and six important priority areas for action – recognition and respect, information and access, economic security, services for carers, education and training and health and wellbeing. Collectively, these priority areas outline how the contribution of Australia’s carers will be better valued, supported and shared.
