Raising awareness of MND

Highlights

  • MND Week and Global MND Day campaigns generated a flurry of social media activity assisting to raise awareness of MND

Stand up for a fair care system posterIn addition to using traditional communication media, this year MND Australia has focused on tapping into social media to extend the outreach of our awareness activities.

MND Australia has used social media to connect with new audiences, particularly people aged 45 and under. The number of MND Australia Facebook fans has quadrupled in the last twelve months with the under 45s making up 73% of fans. This cohort has proven to be highly engaged and supportive of our posts and calls to action.

During MND Week we encouraged Facebook fans and Twitter followers to join our advocacy campaign for a fair care system for all Australians living with MND – no matter how old they are. This post was shared 160 times and seen by over 18,000 people.

To mark Global MND Day we launched the five rights of people living with MND petition in collaboration with the International Alliance of ALS/MND Associations. The online campaign encouraged people to  sign the petition to show they support the right of people living with MND to access appropriate and timely care. The Facebook post was shared 290 times and seen by over 18,000 people.  To date over 800 people have signed the petition. Once again federal politicians were invited to join the Global fight against MND. Many showed their support of people living with MND by wearing a cornflower in the house and senate on 21 June.

In the year ahead we will work strategically with the staff of communications agency, Buchan Consulting, who are providing pro bono support to raise awareness of MND.
