While MND Australia welcomes the much needed investments in aged care, health, disability & research handed down in the Budget, we believe that significant further funding is still required in these sectors.
In particular, while the 23,000 extra aged care home packages announced are a good first step, in light of the recommendations of the Aged Care Royal Commission interim report, and the fact that this will still leave 80,000 people waiting for a home care package, this falls well short of what is needed.
Additionally, only 2,000 of the extra 23,000 packages are Level 4, which means that many people living with MND aged over 64 will continue to be assigned a lower level package. And many will die before receiving a home care package at the level that meets their needs.
We look forward to the delivery of the final Aged Care Royal Commission report in early 2021, which we hope will bring fundamental reform to the aged care sector.
